How’s Solar Energy Growing in Africa?
In 2023, Africa saw significant solar growth, adding at least 3.7 GWp of new solar capacity, marking the best performance ever recorded. South Africa led the way with its largest-ever increase in solar installations in 2023, adding at least 7,781 MW of solar capacity, nearly 47% of all installed capacity in Africa. Notably, 79% of all new capacity installed in 2023 was in South Africa, with commercial and industrial (C&I) capacity surpassing utility-scale capacity since 2022.
